The subtle faces of pride

THE SUBTLE FACES OF PRIDE

Many men imagine pride as obvious arrogance; boasting, showing off, or looking down on others. But pride rarely announces itself so loudly. More often, it hides behind respectable attitudes and behaviors.

Pride can appear in subtle ways:
1. The Pride of Self-Reliance
Some men believe asking for help is a sign of weakness. They prefer to carry burdens alone rather than admit they need support. Yet God never designed life to be lived in isolation.
Even the strongest men need guidance, fellowship, and prayer.

2. The Pride of Being Always Right
Another face of pride is the refusal to admit mistakes. For some men, saying “I was wrong” feels like losing authority. But in reality, the ability to admit wrong is a mark of maturity.
A man who cannot apologize often damages relationships that matter most.

3. The Pride of Spiritual Superiority
Sometimes pride disguises itself in spirituality. A man may begin to think he is more righteous, more disciplined, or more knowledgeable than others. Instead of walking in humility, he begins to compare himself with others.

Jesus consistently warned against this kind of pride.
“For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” — Luke 14:11

The danger of subtle pride is that we often see it in others but not in ourselves.

This is why wise men regularly ask God to search their hearts.

Stay joyful. Stay intentional.
